HIIT tracking in VR: The challenge of doing it alone

High‑Intensity Interval Training is one of the most effective workout structures in fitness, but tracking it accurately inside a standalone VR headset is… complicated. Traditional HIIT relies on heart‑rate‑based targets, specifically Heart Rate Reserve (HRR) ranges. High‑intensity segments typically push players toward 80–90% HRR, while low‑intensity segments aim for 40–50% HRR to promote recovery without fully stopping the workout. Those lows matter – they reset fatigue, stabilize breathing, and prepare the body for the next burst.

In a gym, smart watches and fitness trackers handle all of this automatically. In VR, especially on a standalone device, we don’t have that luxury. No external sensors. No Bluetooth heart‑rate straps. No companion apps feeding us physiological data. Everything has to be inferred from movement, timing, and player behavior.

We explored research on micro head‑movement heart‑rate monitoring, but those methods only work when the user is sitting still. That’s a non‑starter for a game built around swinging, stepping, ducking, and reacting to enemies. So we built our own system – a way to approximate heart rate dynamically, update it in real time, and adjust HIIT pacing based on the player’s fitness level without actually knowing their fitness level.

The algorithms behind this stay under the hood, but the goal is simple: keep highs challenging, keep lows restorative, and keep the workout safe and effective for every player. It’s one of the hardest technical problems in 3Z Incursion, and one of the most important.
