Designing for safety and fun

Building 3Z Incursion means stepping into a world that goes far beyond game design. Exercise science is deep, complex, and full of nuance, and we’ve had to learn a great deal to make sure the game delivers a workout that is effective while still being safe for a wide range of players. Fun was never enough on its own. Every movement pattern, every strike zone, and every obstacle have to support real physical activity without pushing players into repetitive stress or unsafe motions. That is why different enemy types use different strike patterns. Vertical swings for zombies, horizontal strikes for brutes, and quick motions for mutant pigeons. This variety keeps the body moving in different directions and helps avoid overuse of any single muscle group, all while staying grounded in the plausibility of the world.

As we explore how to expand movement beyond sword swings, static obstacles have become a natural addition. Stalactites force players to step to the side, increasing lateral movement and encouraging awareness of enemies that may be approaching in the same lane. Lightbars require players to squat under them, adding core, glute, and leg engagement to the mix. These obstacles deepen the workout potential and make the subway car feel more alive. They also reinforce the idea that players must stay aware of both the environment and the enemies around them, creating a rhythm of movement that feels physical and reactive.

We also know that not every player is comfortable or safely able to perform quick side steps or squats. Safety and accessibility have to be part of the design from the start. This is why players can disable obstacles entirely or switch off lightbars to remove the need to squat. These options let players tailor the experience to their comfort level and physical ability, ensuring that 3Z Incursion remains safe, approachable, and enjoyable for everyone. The goal has always been to create a game that respects the science of exercise while still delivering the thrill of slashing through a subway full of enemies.
