Before 3Z Incursion had choreography, before enemies marched in rhythm, before the subway tunnel felt alive, we ran a long series of experiments to answer one question: How far can music drive combat without breaking gameplay? The answer turned out to be “much farther than we expected,” but getting there required a lot of strange prototypes, stubbed systems, and controlled tests that let us push ideas without risking the rest of the game.
The earliest experiments were intentionally crude. We fed the beat detection system synthetic pulses, artificial tempo ramps, and exaggerated accents to see how reliably it could track musical structure. No enemies. No visuals. Just raw signal interpretation. These tests taught us how sensitive the system needed to be, how much smoothing was required, and how to handle songs with inconsistent production quality. It was the foundation for everything that followed.
Once beat detection was stable, we started pairing it with enemy choreography. These prototypes were messy by design. We spawned simple placeholder enemies that snapped forward on every beat, then tried variations: half‑beats, off‑beats, alternating lanes, staggered pulses. Some experiments felt too mechanical. Others felt chaotic. But every test taught us something about how rhythm could shape pressure, pacing, and physical movement in a beat‑driven combat loop.
Then we tried breaking everything. We fed the system songs with irregular beats, sudden drops, tempo swings, and sections with almost no rhythmic information. These experiments were critical. They taught us how to stabilize combat during unpredictable music, how to maintain safety during chaotic sections, and how to keep the workout readable even when the track wasn’t.
The next phase was full integration. Beat detection drove spawn timing. Spawn timing drove choreography. Choreography drove movement curves. And all of it played out inside the subway tunnel. These experiments were the first time the game felt like a living rhythm‑driven combat experience instead of a collection of isolated systems.
Music‑driven combat didn’t happen by accident. It came from months of controlled tests, stubbed prototypes, and experiments designed to push the limits of what rhythm can do inside a VR fitness game. And it hasn’t stopped. As we continue to learn more about VR fitness and experiment with different songs, we learn new lessons and update the system. And every lesson from these tests are shaping the system players will experience at launch.
