Texture work in 3Z Incursion has always walked a tightrope. On one side, we wanted a zombie‑slashing game with enemies that feel threatening, memorable, and visually distinct. On the other, we needed a style that supports VR fitness – clear silhouettes, readable motion, and no overwhelming detail that turns into visual noise when you’re moving fast.
That’s why all four enemy types – Zombie, Brute, Skyrat, and COUS – use a pseudo‑cartoon texture style. Big swashes of color. Minimal fine detail. Strong shapes. It gives them personality without clutter, and it keeps them readable even during high‑intensity swings and dodges. It’s the middle ground between hyper‑detailed horror textures and pure cartoon simplicity, and it’s been working well.
But the world around them needed something different.
The obstacles – stalactites, lightbars, the subway car roof, and the subway tunnel walls – all benefit from more texture depth. These elements aren’t animated, don’t require split‑second readability, and help sell the gritty subway‑tunnel aesthetic. So we rebuilt them. Higher‑detail textures, better grime layering, and more material variation.
And then we repacked everything.
Optimizing texture packing let us increase detail without hurting performance. Fewer texture calls, better compression, smarter channel usage – all of it adds up to improved frame rates while making the environment feel richer and more grounded.
The result is a cleaner visual balance:
- Enemies stay bold, readable, and fitness‑friendly.
- Obstacles and world geometry gain depth and grit.
- Performance stays locked where we want it.
This update brings the world closer to the look we’ve always imagined and keeps 3Z Incursion running smoothly at the speeds a VR workout demands.
